A quick look at Transgender Models.

It’s monumental not  just to fashion but also society when those who were ridiculed and pushed out of the picture, made to feel insecure about who they are and forced to hide their true selves can be open, truthful and comfortable about their real identities. Androgynous modelling is what’s big right now and it has always been near the forefront of fashion, however its the transgender models who are making their faces known in the high fashion industry which as taking the public by storm.

Trans model Edie Charles shared her opinions on modelling after featuring in the Barneys campaign stating it was “a huge moment for transgender representation in general!” which is absolutely true, fashion is becoming more and more diverse every day, as the more unusual becomes the even more desirable, but what I want to question is can this always be considered a good thing? Edie then went on saying “In any image-based, consumerist society, media and advertising have tremendous influences.” And here’s where the problem lies.

The outbreak and popularity of the Male to Female (MTF) Trans models is undeniably a huge benefit for the LGBT society and the influence of these models will hold should always be a positive, however the question on peoples lips is are we making the fashion industry an even more unachievable other dimension for young girls and boys. The MTF models are everything which the fashion industry desires; they already have the unusual look and the tall lanky figure which is naturally void of curves, however is this painting a negative image for young people?

The answer i believe is no, there is no reason for these images and these models to encourage any kind of anorexia or to increase the prevalence of eating disorders. If anything this should encourage the younger generation to be who they are and for who they are to be whoever they want to be.  According to Stephanie Stark “sub social obsession trends like the "Thigh Gap" emerging in their social media circles, we have to ask: how will the influx of the naturally curve less MTF transgendered model impact body consciousness for young girls?” and this is where the media should be portraying that it is beautiful to be whoever you would like to be,  these models are changing the world as we know it but they are not the only way to be beautiful and although they may be described as perfect they are not the only perfect there is.
